Girl Scouts World Thinking Day: A Virtual Journey through Italy and Beyond

Updated: Feb 9

World Thinking Day is an annual celebration observed by the Girl Scouts around the globe, fostering international understanding and awareness. In our local troop, this year's World Thinking Day took an exciting turn as we embarked on a virtual tour of Italy, delving into its rich history, culture, and cuisine.

Exploring Italy's Landmarks:

Our Girl Scouts eagerly embarked on a virtual journey to explore Italy's iconic landmarks. The awe-inspiring ruins of Pompeii and the grandeur of the Colosseum captured the imagination of the girls, transporting them back in time to witness the grandeur of ancient Italy. The immersive experience sparked curiosity about the country's vibrant history and left the girls with a newfound appreciation for the diverse cultures that shape our world. While "visitng" these historic landmarks of Italy the girls got to explore facts regarding each location coming to understand the importance of the land.

WAGGS Girl Guides in Italy:

As part of our exploration, we delved into the world of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGS) in Italy. We discovered how these dedicated guides are making a positive impact on society through meaningful missions. From empowering girls with equal educational opportunities to advocating for positive change, the WAGGS Girl Guides in Italy are inspiring role models for our scouts. As apart of their learning each of our girls dressed up as a girl guide from Italy. They each wore navy blue pants and light blue shirts with a neckerchief. They learned about the varying levels of Girl Guides and were shocked to knowit goes up to the age of 21.

Celebrating Women in Italian History:

To further enrich our understanding, we dedicated a portion of our World Thinking Day celebration to remarkable women in Italian history. From the pioneers of the first-ever recorded women's march to the trailblazing achievements of the first female lawyer and a Nobel Prize winner, the girls gained insights into the significant contributions of women throughout Italy's history.

Sharing Knowledge with Peers:

In the spirit of World Thinking Day's emphasis on global awareness, our Girl Scouts prepared a presentation to share their newfound knowledge with 123 fellow scouts. They presented fascinating facts about Italy, including its history, culture, and the impact of WAGGS Girl Guides. As an extra treat, the girls shared an authentic Italian meatball recipe, bringing a taste of Italy to their virtual gathering.

Learning from Others:

Our celebration extended beyond Italy as the girls visited booths representing different countries. Through these virtual visits, they learned about the challenges faced by girls in various parts of the world, broadening their perspectives on global issues such as education, water scarcity, rights, and job opportunities.

Inspiring Change:

In the final segment of our World Thinking Day celebration, the girls reflected on their experiences and wrote down the impact they aspire to make in changing the world. Their aspirations centered around promoting equality for girls in education, addressing water scarcity, advocating for rights, and creating opportunities for jobs. This inspiring exercise reinforced the Girl Scouts' commitment to making a positive difference in the world.

World Thinking Day provided our Girl Scouts with a unique opportunity to connect with the world, fostering a sense of global citizenship and empathy. Through their virtual journey to Italy and beyond, the girls not only learned about diverse cultures and historical milestones but also discovered their own potential to contribute to positive change. As we celebrate World Thinking Day, we are reminded that the Girl Scout movement continues to empower young girls to become leaders and advocates for a better, more inclusive world.
